Over the last ten years, The EPA Superfund program, in cooperation with the Sites Management Section, have been involved in investigation and response actions at the Elizabeth Mine in Strafford and Thetford Vermont. Acid mine drainage from the Elizabeth Mine has impaired downstream waters. The response actions to mitigate acid mine drainage have primarily focus on the three major mine features: the two tailing piles (TP-1 and TP-2) and an approximately 12-acre waste rock pile known as TP-3. These two pictures shows the before and after the response action for the 12-acre waste rock pile. Approximately 250,000 cubic yards of waste rock were removed and placed on top of the other tailing piles before a cover system was placed over them. |

state oversight for the investigation and cleanup of properties
where a release of a hazardous material has contaminated the environment
including soils, groundwater, surface water and indoor air. The
primary authority for this oversight can be found in 10 V.S.A.
